Some people religiously get the ritual of upanayana done but the real question is, how many fathers have attained siddhi in the gayatri mantra or performed purascharana or at least performed laksha japa of gayatri before initiating their children into the mantra? Of course, whatever mantra has been initiated, later if not sooner, will eventually have to give its results to a deserving candidate who has obtained it from a lineage consisting of an unbroken chain of masters. We can consider the classic example of gayatri mantra initiated during the time of upanayana to dwijas. But in Kaliyuga owing to our innate incapabilities hard penance is imperative. We don’t see any description of people in ancient days doing elaborate sadhana of a mantra for a long period. For instance the famous Aditya hrudayam, bala atibala mantras etc gave results to Rama soon after initiation. If we read Ramayana and other epics we can clearly infer that all stotrams, mantrams etc used to yield immediate results after initiation. This is even more true with respect to Kaliyuga. These verses from meru tantra indicate that mantras obtained from a guru who has obtained siddhi, yield all desired results immediately but when obtained from asiddha guru, many delays and obstacles (bahuvignadah) can be faced before enjoying the results of the japa.
